The fourth public lecture of the Voices series is being held at the Annexe Gallery in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday 18 May. Hosted by the School of Modern Languages at Cultures at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, this series of five public talks explore the question of democracy in Malaysia and globally. The Islamic Renaissance Front, Strategic Information and Research Development Centre and the Annexe Gallery are supporting partners for this event.

Activist, filmmaker and commentator Fahmi Reza will be speaking on the topic of “Student Power: Redefining Campus Democracy & Student Rights in Malaysia”.For the past 40 years, campus democracy in Malaysia has been reduced to the act of casting a vote once a year to elect a Students’ Representative Council that has no power to govern their own affairs. Public universities are under the authoritarian rule of campus administrators and government officials, while students are treated as immature consumers without rights to have their voices heard or the power to influence decisions. In a truly democratic campus, should students be given more power and autonomy over their own affairs and more rights to participate in university governance?

This is a free event open to the public.  For more information on the Voices series please download our brochure.

Venue:
Annexe Gallery, Central Market Annexe, Top floor (2nd floor), Jalan Hang Kasturi, 50470 Kuala Lumpur.

Time:
8.00pm – 10.30pm
